Consumer Driven Health Plan

Consumer driven health plans (CDHP) came into force in the late 1990s chiefly from health e-commerce ventures. They were intended for engaging consumers much directly in the health care purchases. The primary conceptual model provided much evidence for cost effective and quality information to the consumers via the internet. As a result, more efficient health care market is created.

Since then, these health plan designs have turned down the internet capabilities. They later started turning their attention on the use of the health benefit that combines with a high deductible health plan (HDHP) with an account for the payment of first dollar medical care expenses. There exists a gap between the account contribution and deductible threshold.

As a result there is also the unused -portions of the accounts accumulating without tax penalty into the following benefit year. The Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are the most common models of these plans today.
