What Is POS or Point of Service?

  • A facility normally and commonly observed in indemnity plans the HMO offers the right to the insured patient of what is termed as self direct care. This is in the place of utilizing the services of a primary care physician or PCP that a HMO offers. This "opt-out provision", is typically referred to as a POS or a Point of Service Plan
  • In a POS Plan your primary care physician chosen from within the network of medical service providers would be monitoring your healthcare and is your Point of Service. He could make a referral to a doctor from outside the network, but then you would be entitled to only a portion of compensation.
  • Should the insured member utilize the services of a medical provider from outside of the HMO and PPO networks, the reimbursement for the said services would be on the basis of " out-of-network" rules and regulations, and a copayment and a greater coinsurance would be charged.
  • Since those customers who opt for POS Plans also get to decide where they would seek medical health care , they need to understand the financial import of their choice.
  • For those medical visits within the POS healthcare network, all the paperwork would be completed for you. If you opt however to consult outside of the network, the responsibility of filling out the forms, sending the medical bills in for payment, and carefully keeping an account of medical care receipts is yours.
More than a decade ago, nearly all Americans had an indemnity assurance coverage, wherein they could go to any medical service provider- be it a hospital or a doctor- and the insurance firm and the patient would each pay a portion of the medical bill, as contracted. But nowadays health care has been making rapid strides and has introduced the concept of affordable health insurance. The two types of Health Insurance Plans-namely Fee- For -Service Health Insurance Plan and Managed Care Health Insurance Plan seem smart choices to make if you are looking for a health insurance policy that comes in an affordable and comprehensive package.
