Criticism of Private Health Care Insurance

As it was mentioned in the first paragraph, there are people in the US, and around the world, who don't support PHI. And many of them would prefer to see it disappear and be replaced by the public health system. But, what are the motives of so much hate? Let's evaluate the most important ones.

The first criticism is that private health care insurance companies do not announce their premiums more than a year in advance. That means that you may find that you may be paying more money than the last year. Unfortunately, there is no way in which this scheme can be changed. Private health insurance companies make their estimates based on the information of the last year. If they notice that they will lose money unless they change their premiums, they will have to do it in order to maintain their presence in the market.

The second criticism is that private health insurance coverage is discriminatory. Why? Because they charge different amounts of money to each person, depending on their m edical condition. For example, if a person suffers from diabetes, the cost of private health insurance will be much higher than the one for a healthier person. Unfortunately, there is no way in which an insurance company can be profitable if it charges the same to everyone.

The third most important criticism to an insurance company is that they may use paperwork and bureaucracy in order to not attend a client. Unfortunately, this kind of things happen. But they are not limited to the private sector. If you make a public and private health insurance comparison, you will find that in both of them exists this problem. Of course, that is no excuse. Insur ance companies exist because of their clients, and it's in their best interest to take care of them.

Finally, there is the issue of how much is the insurance company prepared to do. For example, a patient who suffers from cancer may want to pursue an experimental treatment. Unfortunately for him, that kind of treatments are not covere d by the policies of insurance companies.

In reality, it makes sense that insurance companies can't use experimental treatments. The patient could end suffering a terrible death due to the treatment, which could end in a possible sue by the family members. Scientific experiments are a very delicate and complicated matter. No wonder then that it takes years to validate that a determined treatment actually works.

So, what is the future of health insurance, private or public. Many people say that the public health system will have to disappear in order to be replaced by a more efficient private health system. Others say that privat e health insurance will disappear and be replaced by a more humanistic public health insurance.

In reality, it is more probable that both of them will continue to exist. Private health insurance plans have demonstrated for the last five decades the ability to reach wide extensions of the population, something that was unthinkable a hundred years ago . And there is still a long road ahead for private health care insurance. Consider the millions of people in the world who still can't access this marvel of our modern world.
